From Hospitality to Aerospace: Louisa’s journey at Airbus
In this blog, Louisa Grainger shares her personal journey transitioning from the hospitality industry to the aerospace sector. Her story highlights the power of transferable skills, on-the-job learning, and the strong support systems in place to help people succeed at Airbus.

Taking the leap: a career change that paid off

Before joining Airbus, I was working as a Waitress. While that job helped me get by, it didn’t offer the long-term progression I was looking for. I reached a point where I knew I needed something different, something more secure, with room to grow. My sister began her career here through the Airbus apprenticeship programme, and seeing her thrive gave me the motivation to apply. It’s honestly the best decision I’ve ever made.

A look into my day-to-day

My day mainly involves applying stringers to the skin panels and mastering it gives me a sense of pride and accomplishment.

What truly makes the experience enjoyable is the team I work with. Everyone is supportive, easy-going, and helpful. No two days feel the same when you’re surrounded by people who bring good energy and a strong sense of camaraderie.

Being part of a strong, supportive team

I’ve never worked with a better group of people. From day one, I was made to feel welcome and included. The team dynamic is fantastic, and I feel like a valued member of the team. It’s that inclusive, down-to-earth environment that makes a huge difference.

What I find most rewarding

For me, the most rewarding part of my job is reaching a level of confidence where I can not only do my role effectively but also support others. I’m the kind of person who won’t sit back and watch someone struggle - if I can help, I absolutely will. That’s something I take pride in.

Skills test tips

My biggest piece of advice? Read the Standard Operating Instruction (SOI) carefully - it’s crucial. Even if you know what you’re doing, skipping that part could mean an instant fail on the test. Make sure to check your equipment, and if something isn’t right, speak up. The trainers are brilliant, approachable, supportive, and always willing to help.

A smooth onboarding experience

I found the onboarding process really straightforward. I applied, completed the skills test, and was working on-site within a few months. If ever I needed any assistance, the team at Guidant Global were always there to help me through any issues. That support made a huge difference.

My advice to anyone considering a role at Airbus

Starting my career at Airbus has been a transformative experience. If you’re thinking about applying - do it! It’s one of the best decisions I’ve made. Once you’re in, there are so many directions your career can take you. Airbus offers a variety of pathways, and there’s something here for everyone, if you’re willing to put the work in.
